It gives me great pleasure to announce that for our ninth film — shooting on July 31st, to be posted August 7th — Caitlin McEwan will be directing her own script, currently entitled “In the Picture, or The Applebox.” It’s a sweet, fanciful piece of meta-narrative, with very little dialogue and loads and loads of charm.
This will be a special film for several reasons. First of all, it’s the first 12in12 film that isn’t written or directed by Mike or myself, which means that we’ll be acting as producers in the truest sense — providing a venue for someone else’s work to shine. I can’t think of a better opportunity to do that; not only is it a wonderful script, but Caitlin is the reason Mike and I know each other in the first place. She and Mike were at the Esper Studio together, and she heartily recommended us to one another, emphasizing that we had similar senses of humor. (To this day, I don’t know whether that was meant as a compliment.) In a sense, then, Caitlin McEwan is the godmother of 12 Films 12 Weeks, and there’s a pleasant circularity to bringing her into the fold.
Also, Caitlin McEwan is my sister, and it’s always fun working with family. After Darcy Boynton’s stunning appearance in “Script 2,” that leaves only one sibling of mine uninitiated into 12in12. Devin McEwan, if you’re out there: call me.
